Pretoria, 10 September 2018. On 24 September this year the Voortrekker Monument will celebrate Heritage Day with a Heritage Festival, the 80th anniversary of the Voortrekker Monument and also present the last Antique and Collectables Fair for 2018. The antique market takes place on the roof of the large amphitheatre and the Heritage Festival will take place at the picnic site. Both the market and the heritage festival takes place from 09:00 to 15:00 and the entry fee for both is R30 per vehicle. Visitors should tell the gate where they are going and please keep their entrance fees handy.

The Heritage Festival is going to be a great family day full of interesting activities en cultural demonstrations. We are going to bake bread in a traditional oven, roast coffee beans, make candles, churn butter and plait whips. The Trekboervereniging will present a typical Voortrekker exhibition at the old site near the traditional oven and there will also be demonstrations of forging, and firing of muzzle loading rifles. In addition to a host of trinkets, hand-made crafts and bookstalls, there will be potjiekos, canned goods and sweets for sale. We will fire our cannon Susanna at 12:090 and Nadine and Joe Voster will provide the musical entertainment.

The antique market is now already in its fourteenth year and is considered to be the best of its kind in the country. Stalls at this market are unobtainable. This is because stall owners do not easily give up their space. Currently, there are 171 stalls selling a variety of items such as old enamelware, coins, beautiful porcelain, dolls, dinner services, knives, jewellery, glassware and a whole lot more.

There is a restaurant and several food stalls at the market, as well as parking and access for disabled visitors with wheelchairs. Visitors should please leave their dogs and other pets at home as the Monument is situated in a nature reserve and dogs or other pets are not allowed on site.

Enquiries concerning the antique market may be directed to Geraldine Paulsen at 012 326 6770 or at marketing@vtm.org.za. Enquiries regarding the Heritage Festival may be directed to Thea Furstenburg at thea@vtm.org.za but please note that there are no stalls available at this time.
