Pretoria, 8 October 2019. After a failed carjacking at the Fountains, three robbers, two of whom were armed, attacked and robbed the guard on duty at the main gate of the Voortrekker Monument just after one this morning.
During the attack, they broke the window of the gate office and stole the cash register and a computer screen . They could not take the hard drive of the computer. They also destroyed the camera at the main gate and took the personal belongings of the guard. Luckily he was not seriously injured. No cash is kept overnight at the gate offices or in any of the other offices of the Voortrekker Monument.
According to the guard on duty, the men were not South African citizens. We thank the police who were on scene very early this morning. Despite the fact that the robbers destroyed the camera at the gate, the police could obtain clear photos of the robbers from the server.
The Monument will continue with normal business hours today and visitors will make use of the alternative entrance at the main gate.
