Fitness in the outdoors

Come and work out outdoors and enjoy the beautiful views of the Voortrekker Monument grounds while working on your health. Our outdoor gym is perfect for individuals of all fitness levels – from beginners to avid exercise enthusiasts.

The gym is equipped with several robust exercise stations, allowing you to have a complete workout in nature. Choose from several options such as:

  • Strength training
  • Cardio-focused stations
  • Bodyweight exercises
  • Mobility and stretching areas

Whether you’re looking for a quick workout, a group activity or a leisurely morning routine, the outdoor gym offers you the freedom to experience fitness your way – all in a safe, open and inspiring environment.

HIKING TRAILS

Explore the hiking trails of the Voortrekker Monument

Looking for a stroll or a more challenging hike, the Voortrekker Monument offers walking trails for every taste and fitness level. The trails take you through indigenous nature, with breathtaking views of Pretoria, and offer unique opportunities to see game and birds in their natural habitat. It is the ideal way to enjoy the outdoors while staying active and appreciating cultural heritage at the same time. Feel free to bring your family or friends and experience the Monument from a new angle.

All trails start near reception, and visitors are advised to bring water, sun protection and sturdy walking shoes. 

Choose from the following trails

Red Route: View Trail

Distance: 3 km

This route offers beautiful panoramic views of Pretoria and the surrounding landscape. Perfect for photos and quiet reflection.

Green Route: Gardens and Memorial Walls

Distance: 3 km

This route takes you through the historic site, with access to various memorials, indigenous gardens and quiet areas for reflection.

Yellow Route: Sugarbush

Distance: 3.5 km

This route travels through fynbos areas and explores the rich plant life – especially various sugarbush trees that bloom seasonally.

Blue Route: Grassland

Distance: 3.5 km

This peaceful route takes you through open, winding grasslands – ideal for game viewing and bird watching.

Black Route: 3-in-1 Route

Distance: 8 km

Our longest and most extensive route, combining parts of the red, yellow and blue routes. This route is intended for the more experienced hiker who wants to experience everything in one.

MOUNTAIN BIKING AND CYCLING ROUTES

Cycling through heritage and nature

The Voortrekker Monument offers several routes for cyclists of all levels, with choices between adventurous dirt roads and more comfortable tarmac roads. Here you don’t just cycle for fitness – you also experience history, breathtaking natural scenery and often wildlife moving along your route.

Mountain bike routes:

The Voortrekker Monument boasts five mountain bike routes specially designed for different skill levels and riding styles:

  • Yellow Route – 4.6 km | 96 m climb
  • Red Route – 4.2 km | 86 m climb
  • White Route – 4.8 km | 82 m climb
  • Grey Route – 17 km | 150 m climb
  • Black Route – 3.8 km | 97 m climb
Tarmac Routes:

Our tarmac routes at the Voortrekker Monument offer a safe, comfortable and scenic environment for cyclists of all ages and skill levels. The routes wind through our historic terrain and offer an ideal balance between relaxation and exercise.

Whether you’re just looking to enjoy a leisurely family ride or looking for a steady workout, the well-maintained tarmac roads make every ride enjoyable. These routes are especially suitable for road cyclists, children on their bikes, or anyone who prefers comfort over technical challenges.

HORSE RIDING

Experience the Voortrekker Monument on horseback

Experience the Voortrekker Monument from a unique perspective – on the back of a horse. Our horse rides offer a peaceful, nostalgic and adventurous way to explore the beautiful natural area surrounding the Monument.

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, our guided rides are suitable for all levels of experience and all ages. Children are also welcome to ride safely under supervision.

What to expect:

  • Rides through indigenous grasslands and tree-lined trails
  • Opportunities to see wildlife and birds in their natural habitat
  • Safe, guided rides led by experienced horse handlers

Horse rides are available by prior arrangement. Visitors can also meet these horses during festivals and children’s activities at the Monument.

PARKRUN

parkrun is back at the Voortrekker Monument

Start your Saturday on an energetic note with a free 5 km parkrun!

Bring the whole family and enjoy a refreshing morning jog between 08:00 and 10:00 on our safe, beautiful routes.

ENTRANCE FEES

Enjoy unlimited nature, fresh air and active recreation at affordable rates. Choose between a day visit or a monthly pass, depending on how often you want to use the trails.

Jogging, hiking and cycling routes

Day tickets:

  • Adult: R55
  • Scholar (6–18 years): R35

Monthly ticket:

  • Adult: R75
  • Scholar: R35

Season tickets (3 months):

  • Adult: R215
  • Scholar (6–18 years): R150

Annual Ticket:

  • Adult: R700
  • Scholar (6–18 years): R150

Horse Riding

  • Adult: R200 per person
  • Student (under 18 years): R150
  • Duration: 1 hour
